Nor does it make up for the lack of four-balls, skins, or that the online portion is as basic as they come. But the Battlefield course is currently the only novelty course available, which is yet another suggestion that this game wasn’t quite ready.Īnd anyway, novelty courses can’t make up for a Career mode that is a linear parade of tournaments, and doesn’t even give you control over where your stat points go. Still, as a proof of concept, you imagine the designers can have some fun. It’s a fun idea, let down slightly by the fact that - when you take the frills away- the holes themselves are 18 consecutive dull par 3s. It will eventually allow for more detailed courses, showcased in the Battlefield 4 themed Paracel Storm, which has watchtowers and barracks scattered around as well as giant aircraft carriers beached on the course. ‘Golf without limits’ is the tagline, and while the game has limits all over the place, you do feel the expanse of the golf course more keenly. While the ‘streamed’ nature of the courses means that if you hit a shot wildly off course -onto an adjacent hole, say- the game won’t call out of bounds and reset you, but have you play from where you lie.
It looks great, for a start, with detailed course textures and lighting. It’s a similar system to driving aids on a racing game and works well.Įlsewhere, Frostbite 3 does flex its muscles. Then you can switch it off, but perhaps keep aftertouch because you’re not quite ready to give it up, or just find it fun. It helps the learning curve greatly, being able to play for a while using the ‘focus arc’ which shows you almost exactly where your ball will end up after wind and incline is taken into account.
This is all adjustable, allowing you custom set-ups which mix the styles to your preference and ability.

While the Tour mode is the full sim using the swing stick, removing nearly all of the aids and asking you to keep your stick work straight and true, lest the ball get shanked into the rough. The three-click system is a more old-school interpretation of golf, using a meter and button presses to determine swing power and accuracy. Arcade uses the tactile swing stick (pull down on the stick for backswing, push up to strike) and allows you a plethora of aids, power boosts off the tee, aftertouch spin and zoom. The control system is separated into three distinct pre-sets. Which is a shame, because on it, PGA Tour plays an excellent game of golf. Such an overhaul is not necessarily a simple task, but given both the hiatus and the sheer scale of cutbacks, the game comes off as drastically undercooked off the course. There is some sympathy to be had transitioning to a new console generation, particularly with PGA Tour now being built in EA’s Frostbite 3 engine. Though we did have a similar situation with a dramatically pared back NHL15. And EA usually deliver: FIFA and Madden are as feature-packed as they come. In some ways we are a spoilt lot, used to a certain amount of frills in our sports games. Even the Create A Golfer options, once the pride of an industry, has been reduced to selecting pre-made faces which left my guy looking like an extra from a dodgy mafia movie. The amount of courses is down from 20 to 12 (the Augusta National is gone, meaning no Masters), the number of playable golfers has been drastically reduced (notably including the axing of any LPGA roster) and features a stripped back career mode. It is the first PGA Tour on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after last year’s hiatus and in terms of feature-set, much has been lost in the translation. Tiger’s absence is just one thing that feels missing from this year’s alarmingly sparse release. Woods has gone from cover hero to not even being featured in the game.īut the latest version of PGA Tour has more pressing concerns than McIlroy’s injury or Woods’ waning star. As Woods’ spectacular tumble out of golf’s top 250 players continues, there is something symbolic about McIlroy’s name emblazoned on the box.

Tiger Woods long-standing endorsement of the series ran from 1998 to 2013, a partnership that only enhanced Woods reputation and made EA’s game synonymous with video game golf. Still, this absence aside, McIlroy putting his name to the PGA Tour series is a big deal in both golf and videogameland. The publisher would surely have loved to see Rory McIlroy tearing up the leaderboard at this past weekend’s Open as a signal of a new era.
